Neck Pain Treatment at Cannon Chiropractic, PLLC

Woman with hand on neckYour head weighs about as much as a bowling ball, and it’s perched on the top of your neck, where you have to keep it upright and turn it this way and that with your muscles and the delicate bones of your neck. All day, every day.

That’s not easy! Your neck and shoulders work hard and can accumulate a great deal of stress and tension. This stress can cause deviations in the relationships of the seven bones of your cervical spine (neck), resulting in neck pain and reduced mobility.

Types of Neck Pain

There are minor types of neck pain, as well as major types. Stiffness or soreness in the neck and/or shoulders is generally considered minor. However, if the stiffness or other symptoms persist, recur or result from a trauma or other injury, it is considered major.

How Stress Contributes to Neck Pain

Stress stemming from physical, emotional or environmental factors can set up shop in your neck and shoulders, creating or worsening neck pain. Any area of your body that is already overtaxed can be a weak link in your body’s defenses, allowing stress to accumulate in that area.

People tend to overlook emotional stress, but there’s a reason we say that something that irritates us is a “pain in the neck.” Negative emotions can cause conscious or unconscious tightening of the muscles in our shoulders, neck and even jaw. If the situation continues, muscle spasms can occur, leading to headaches and so on.

Using pain relieving medication can often get you through the day, but it doesn’t address the underlying cause, so the condition continues to worsen.
