Quick answer
Yes, sitting at a desk all day can lead to lower back pain. It’s usually about how long you sit and how you sit. Hours in one position, especially slumped or leaning toward a screen, can strain your back and neck. Getting up about every 30 minutes, keeping your screen at eye level, and moving in the evening can help.
The NC Research Campus in Kannapolis is full of people who sit for a living. Some days it’s a lab stool, some days it’s a desk and two monitors, and a lot of days it’s both. Then you get home, make dinner, and settle onto the couch for the rest of the evening.
Can sitting at a desk all day cause lower back pain?
The biggest problem is staying in one position for hours. Your muscles get tired of holding the same shape, and most of us start to slump or lean toward the screen as the day goes on.
Your neck often feels it first, because your head weighs about 10 pounds when it sits right over your shoulders. The farther it leans forward, the more load it puts on your neck and upper back. That adds up by 4 o’clock, and poor posture over time can lead to neck and shoulder strain and back pain.
Small habits that help at work
You can’t skip the work, but you can break up the sitting with a few simple habits:
- Stand up and change positions about every 30 minutes. A walk to refill your water counts.
- Set your monitor straight ahead at eye level so you aren’t looking down all day.
- Keep your elbows bent at about a 90-degree angle when you type.
- Use a chair that supports your back. A rolled towel behind your low back works in a pinch.
- Mix up your tasks when you can. Your body likes variety.
A standing desk can help, but it isn’t a cure on its own, because you still need to move around during the day.
Carry it home, too
The evening is where a lot of us undo the good habits. After a long day in a chair, the couch feels earned, so try a short walk after dinner or a few minutes of stretching before you settle in. The whole family can join in, and it doubles as time together after a busy day.

When to get it checked
A stiff back after a heavy work week is common. If the pain keeps coming back, lasts more than a few weeks, or starts limiting what you can do, don’t just sit on it.
